Police cracking down on 'cruise night' street racers, tire squealers and stereo blasters

WINNIPEG--Winnipeg police are cracking down on "cruise night" street racers, tire squealers and stereo blasters - and not just on the main drag.

"We’re going to address these issues not just on Portage Avenue but all over the city," said police spokesman Const. Jason Michalyshen.

The crackdown has already begun.

Police seized a vehicle allegedly involved in street racing on McPhillips Street near Inkster Boulevard Sunday night at about 10:30 p.m., he said.

The driver was charged with racing under the Highway Traffic Act and the vehicle was towed away on the spot, he said.

The police said that while the vast majority of motorists taking part in cruise night obey the law, police are still receiving complaints regarding racing, dangerous operation of motor vehicles, and noisy operation of motor vehicles - including obnoxious drivers playing their stereos too loud.

"Not everybody should be forced to listen," Michalyshen said.

The complaints come from all areas of the city, and the police are responding, he said.

I hope they do what they say they are going to do. More enforcement is good. Get these idiots off the road. And make sure people are driving around with front license plates!

there's nothing worse than being beside a motorist who just obnixously blasts their stereo regardless of the music. i really hope they crack down on that.
