Default Project: Insulating the garage

With our winters here and now owning an attached garage, I knew I wanted to insulate the garage so that I could heat it up and work in a warm area in the winter. This is a 22' by 22' garage. Moved all the contents to the middle and covered it all up.

The garage had a lot of gaps and areas that wind and air could move through. The front of the garage that was touching the actual house was already insulated by code, so it was only the other three walls I had to worry about. The garage door was also upgraded to an insulated and sealed R-value type.

The spray foam trailer. This monstrosity has all the equipment used to blow in spray foam. This is FIRE's side gig, it was professionally done on site! I also got to spray some of it myself. I love tools and heavy machinery

AFTER:
The side two walls and surrounding garage door areas were filled in and vapour barrier-ed with spray foam. Immediate difference in sound and feel inside the garage.

Another FIRE and ICE construction project.

Next step, the upper ceiling area...

Very nice! Are you planning on running more outlets?

What are you doing for the walls? Particle board or dry wall?

I might try a few more outlets, but not a priority. I have 3 in there already plus the exterior ones as well. I did also wire the garage with speaker wire, CAT5e and RG6 cable for cable, internet, and IP cameras.

Will be finishing the interior hopefully in the spring. I was going to use drywall and fully finish the walls, as I wanted the garage to look like any other part of the house interior.

And the roof is insulated and half finished now. Will update soon.

You need this then... buy buy buy!
$135, cheaper than renting.

Yeah, I have home automation so I can record or view live video. I don't really need it, but its a cool toy to have.

Lots of people have commented on the spray foam, I didn't think it was that big a deal. People love it, I just did it cause it was easier to do.

Update on ceilings:

Since the walls were insulated, but the ceiling was still wide open and letting in cold air, I decided to seal it off and separate if from the main garage area. First step was to install baffles to keep ventilation moving in the attic area from the soffits. I purchased some styrofoam baffles.

Raft-R-Mate by Corning ware:

These were installed around the perimeter to keep fresh air flow above the garage

Vapour barrier was then stapled in to separate the ceiling and roof area. Batts of fibreglass insulation left over from FIRE's basement were thrown into the ceiling on top of the barrier and trusses.

I don't have a picture of the final result, but the whole area is covered in a layer of fibreglass batts. The area was then sealed off from thelower area. This is where I am stopping for the season. In the spring I will be drywalling the ceiling. With the vapour barrier in, I have measured temperatures as high as 1C with it being -20C outside.
