I just read over this standard and it looks obsolete. I will be reviewing SAE J 1492 as this standard superceeds J1169. Stay tuned for more details. I'm betting the WPS will be using this method to test vehicles now that they have the calibrated sound pressure level measuring devices (aka a dB meter) for measuring motorcycles.

Kudos to the WPS for taking the next step and actually getting the proper equipment. No more guesswork. Still not convinced that the hassle of everything from no shift patterns to no washer fluid is still being enforced.

Edit - After reading this standard, J1492 will more than likely be the next step as it's the same standard created for noise enforcement in California. Im still trying to figure out the dB limit to go by. In short, the meter must be 20" from the exhaust (depending on style), at a 45 deg angle (+0, -10deg) and no more than 8" from the ground for the test.

RPM sweep (from idle) shall be 3/4 of the rated HP and held at a constant for 1-2 seconds. Example - Oregon uses 2500RPM as their test speed for noise and emissions, California and Florida use 3000RPM.

A co-worker knows some people within the Manitoba Association of Auto Clubs. They are having a meeting with the police and MPI on August 11th and are looking for examples of unjust tickets that they can use to demonstrate harassment. A key example would be a ticket that clearly specifies "no exhaust baffles" as there is no law specifying that.

Act quickly if you do, the longer MAAC has to prepare the better their chances of being heard and making a difference. I can pass along copies of tickets or whatever you have.
