Default Need help for my ugly looking front garden

Just taking a page from Astropapa's thread. I've got a pretty bare front garden and am thinking of ways to improve the look of the front end of the house. It currently sports a pine shrub and rocks haha.

Just curious to see how other peoples front gardens turned out and if there are any tips on building a nice looking garden.

We are currently planning out our landscaping....nice shrubs and rocks are always good!! I really like the big rocks but heard they are pretty $$

I like it to be simply and not too much. Seen some that were just TOO much....

I wanted a sweeping garden out front but realized I would have to redo the walkway..an added expense. Im looking to layout my property in CAD and start messing around w/ ideas and get some costing figured out. I did the interior of my house and my material calcs were all w/in my 3% contingency for the renos I recently did!

Big rocks are nice but you're right..very $$. Even the smaller prefab'd stone is expensive.

POST YOUR GARDEN PICS! Lets get some summer ideas.

This is one of my projects this year as well. Finally got rid of those horrible bushes in my front yard. Once I finish the exterior painting the next job will probably be the garden. Planning on getting stones as well.

Don't do wood ties if you want it to be fairly maintenace free as they can become a breeding ground to carpenter ants.

Minh made a flower bed in front of our house. We just put shrubs because I suck at gardening. My mom planted lillies, which I don't need to plant each year. We have lots of big rocks in our area and they're free!! You should come here and pick some up!

Post a picture of your front yard.

someone post some pictures of big stones in peoples front yards. When I was at the garden centre picking out my flowers for my flower bed, the guy who works there told me it's the trend for homeowners now. but I can't seem to picture it. POST 'EM PEOPLE!

I'll try to nab some shots of big stone yards... A cpl neighbours have used them here for driveway end markers, house numbers and edging components. A guy down the street has a full rock/no water front yard, looks, not bad. A couple I have seen have a perfect balance. We have Jensens and a giant stone retail place on McG, practically around the corner... lots of inspirations if you go to those places also.

I removed a schwack of shrubs (they attract Voles) and cleaned up my front feature garden over time... needs constant maintenance though.. a lot of people think once you put stones down, you never have to touch it again. I put treatment and a dbl weed blocker sheet down and shit still finds its way though, hahaha.

Ps, one suggestion - before you plant any nice shrubs/trees, whatever...... dig a nice deep hole in the spot you're thinking of planting. A LOT of Winnipeg yards have a minimum of top soil and you hit clay REAL FAST. That might influence what you plant.

Also - most of your services (unless you have telepoles everywhere) run up to your house via the front yard. So, Hydro, Gas, Electric, Cable........ it's free to get the guys out to spot underground lines, but I do believe they're all 18-24" down. That's not that deep, depending on what you're doing.
